Far Eastern Private School, Al Shahba Campus’ Youth for the Environment Club collects aluminum cans for the Emirates Environmental Group’s 26th Can Collection Drive, from October to November 2022.
The YFE club executed its campaign by delegating two groups of three members — one group went around the girls’ block and the other to the boys’ block. They collected and listed the number of cans accumulated from each classroom either during recess, before, or after assembly and then they would store the cans in the school storage room. After weeks of collecting cans every day, the club officers gathered at the front of the school on November 11 to review the cans collected, then crushed and weighed them.
To give us an insight into the club members’ experience, the Vice-President of the YFTE Club, Angel Resurreccion shared her thoughts on the campaign. “I believe the Can Collection Campaign is very significant, not only to the officers and members of the YFTE club, but to all FEPSians — they were given a chance to contribute in helping the environment. I hope the school considers making it annual and implements more campaigns like it. It is through these that we introduce students to small steps towards a better future.” Her feelings show us that the club has enjoyed its activities and wants to do more of them.
This year’s slogan for the EEG Can Collection Drive is “Cancel the Linear, Enable the Circular.” They have proudly surpassed their goal of collecting 20,000 kg of cans by collecting 23,253 kg of cans. By 2030, we must achieve Sustainable Development Goals through campaigns like these, and academic institutions can be a helpful place to start. Students are more than happy to participate in ensuring that the planet’s future is secure because they are the future of Mother Earth.
