On October 28th, 2024, FEPSians gathered for the highly anticipated Lingua Palooza. This four-day festival celebrates linguistic diversity and cultural unity, inviting students to engage in various activities. Under the theme “One World, Many Voices: Bridging Cultures Through Languages,”participants will explore different cultures and languages, deepening their appreciation for diverse traditions.
How do you perceive language? Is it merely a means of communication, or does it hold a more profound significance—a portrayal of your true self, a connection to your roots, or a means of empathy towards others?
The principal of FEPS (Al Shaba), Ms. Mary Jane P. Onato, commenced the event Lingua Palooza by emphasizing the significance of embracing languages and cultures for all individuals. She later revealed initiatives linked to the event, including the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program and the Read To Succeed program. Both strive to enhance reading abilities, asserting that reading will also improve their writing and critical thinking skills. She also emphasized that additional initiatives, similar to those previously mentioned, will be available throughout the entire academic year to support student improvement. These programs were officially launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the beginning of a school year dedicated to enriching the minds of future generations.
From little librarians to favorite movie characters, fairy tale characters, Greek deities, and traditional Filipino attire, students from all levels shone brightly in their dazzling costumes. Additionally, students participated in various lively performances on stage proudly prepared by the language departments. From passionate speeches and heartfelt poems to soulful songs and traditional dances, they showcase the beauty and highlight the power of language to inspire, unite, and honor our identities.
The Filipino department organized numerous competitions showcasing the beauty of “Panitikang Pilipino,” including speeches and quiz bees. The grade 10 students participated in a news writing contest called “Pagsulat ng Balita.” The winner, Alexandra B. Santilles, hailing from 10C-Einstein, described the experience as thrilling and anxiety-inducing. “I was thrilled to have the chance to write news in Filipino, yet nervous about expressing ideas clearly in our language. This experience has pushed me to improve, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to strengthen my journalism skills.” Jamie Biel Perez from 9C-Dalton, who came in second place in the “Pagsulat ng Lathalain,” expressed, “I admit that it was challenging and a bit stressful, specifically the events leading up to it. However, the overall experience and process were so rewarding that I felt fulfilled whether I secured a place or not.”
Assorted competitions were held in the English department to highlight diversity and talents. A contest was organized for making posters, allowing students to turn their thoughts and ideas into beautiful works. Princess Eunice G. Eslava from 9C-Dalton, the victor, stated, “Making the poster was like bringing an idea to life, blending art with meaning in each color and design choice. It was challenging yet inspiring, helping me find new ways to communicate visually. This experience boosted my creativity and showed me the impact of thoughtful design.”
The students were allowed to share their viewpoints and ideas through public speaking. The sophomore students participated in a debate addressing relevant issues, sharing their views on justice and equity. Moreover, in extemporaneous speaking, competitors shared personal narratives and connected through spontaneous conversation. These various contests aid students in enhancing their abilities in artistic and academic realms.
The event concluded with remarks from Mr. Paul Benedict N. Yacap, the vice principal of FEPS (Al Shahba), who emphasized the importance of carrying the spirit of Language Week, or Lingua Palooza, into our daily lives. He stated, “Let’s all work together to create a world where all voices, whether big or small, are valued and appreciated.”
The Lingua Palooza celebration reminded us that our differences are not barriers but beautiful layers that make our world more vibrant. Each language carries the stories, struggles, and dreams of its people, and together, they form a powerful kaleidoscope of human connection. In celebrating this diversity, we find common ground—a shared respect for every voice, every word, and every culture. Let us continue to honor and embrace the languages that bind us, bringing us closer to one another and the shared world we call home.
