Thoughts evoked and experiences shared—the 12th edition of the annual Poetic Heart held in Dubai Academic City on February 9, 2023, served as a medium to convey a powerful message. That is, to foster unity between us, coinciding individuals.
Every year a well-thought-out theme is introduced; this year’s focus was on ‘Rekindling Values and Co-Existence.’ Going through difficult times, we may have lost focus on the core values that emphasize the fundamental good of people, which are essential to the development and peaceful living of our world as a diverse society. Thus, selected young poets from different schools participated in the Poetic Heart, taking the audience on an emotional journey.
The Emirates Institute for Banking and Financial Studies (EIBFS) called out to 700 audiences of renowned poets, members of the media, and students. The venue was packed with enthusiastic performers waiting for their turn to get on stage to deliver their thought-provoking messages.
A poet of our own, Jessamyn Guinanao, recited her piece entitled “We, the Torchbearers.” The poem’s profound and sincere message warmed the hearts of everyone listening. “Together, we will restore the harmony of lives. Never will there be a starless sky, for we, torchbearers, will raise our flaming torch.” Guinanao wrote in her poem. “With the heat that shapes and the light that shines, no path on land and sea will go unexplored.” Despite the wars we face, despite the suffering of people, there will always be a spark within us that rejoices and sings—our spirit still lights its flame.
When interviewed about the experience, Guinanao said, “The Poetic Heart has always been dear to me. I can still picture myself in 2019 as a 7th grader, when I first attended this same event and with my seat amongst the awestruck audience. It feels surreal to return four years later with my feet onstage and a microphone in hand, delivering a piece myself.”
After the segment of poets came the performance from a choir and a school band, which showcased melodious symphonies. The room was then filled with escalating voices as everyone happily sang along. As this year’s program came to a close, we were left with radiant smiles and fervent hearts kindled with a desire to uphold the core principles that mankind must bear.
Indeed, the Poetic Heart has been a twelve-year euphonious journey that aims to revive humanistic values. Its noble vision of living in harmony with the environment teaches us to respect the sanctity of each life and to cherish it for years to come.
